Day 3: Volcano National Park

After an early breakfast at the lodge, you set out for your second gorilla trek. You are assigned a different family for a completely new and unique experience. After lunch at the lodge you set out for the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. These are beautiful lakes located at the base of volcano Muhabura and close to the border with Uganda; are surrounded by steep hills and large waterfalls with a backdrop of the Virunga volcanic mountains. These twin lakes are great spots to be visited after watching the gorillas in the Rwandan mountains. Their deep blue waters ringed by steep hills and tall waterfalls with the outlines of the nearby Virunga Volcanoes provide a spectacular backdrop.

Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are separated by a 1km wide strip of land (thought to be an ancient lava flow from Sabyinyo). Scenery is breathtaking here as the shores of the lakes are heavily terraced and cultivated with crops and volcanoes loom ominously in the distance. You’ll end the night with dinner back at the lodge.

 Day 4: Kigali

After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll return to Kigali for a city tour, including local markets, and two museums dedicated to the Tutsi genocide of 1994. The Campaign Against Genocide museum, located within the parliament and The Kigali Genocide Memorial. These two work in tandem to effectively tell the story of the atrocities and the tireless work to end them. The CAG includes both a guided tour and the opportunity to see sections of parliament that were attacked during the genocide. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It honours the memory of the more than one million Rwandans killed in 1994 through education and peace-building.
